FFA activities don’t start and top with school calendar.  Members are involved in activities in the summer months as well.  On May 23 & 24, HC FFA members attended the Nebraska FFA Chapter Officer Leadership Training at The Leadership Center in Aurora Nebraska.  Officers experience training specific to their office along with personal and team building leadership activities.  Members attending this year were Wesley Wach, Sage Sherman, Kelli Spike, Ethan Broker, Sydney Mullen, Jaycee Lapp and Ashton Erickson. A highlight of the conference was the HC FFA Officers won first place in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies competition.

From June 27-July 1, FFA members Wesley Wach and Ethan Broker, along with advisor Randy Vlasin attended the FFA Washington Leadership Conference (WLC) in Washington, D.C. Students spent the week in workshops, seminars and small groups where the focus was on identifying and developing their personal strengths and goals, analyzing community needs and experiencing comprehensive leadership training. The capstone event was a civic engagement activity where participants apply what they have learned to a hands-on activity that included packing 60,000 meals for the less fortunate of our country.

WLC participants also experienced the history of the nation's capital and tour landmarks including the Washington Monument, War Memorial, the National Mall, Arlington National Cemetery and the U.S. Capitol, among others.

Here is what the two HC FFA Members had to say about their WLC experience:

“Most of the leadership conferences I’ve attended have thrown information at me that went in one ear and out the other, but WLC truly inspired me to develop my leadership abilities and go serve other people and my community.  I enjoyed touring D.C. and I met so many amazing people.  It was an experience I will never forget,” according to Wesley Wach.

Ethan Broker added, “My experience at WLC was definitely one to remember.  While in D.C., I learned many new things, met new people and saw our Nation’s monuments.  I’m excited to use the knowledge I gained at WLC during the upcoming school year.”

HC FFA members will be involved in other activities as summer moves along.  These include:

Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs: FFA members work with SAE programs during the course of the year.  The SAE program is an outside of class, work experience program where students develop new skills and earn money.  During the summer months, the FFA Advisor visits FFA members and consults with them about their SAE program.

National Ag Sales:   As reported in April, the HC FFA Agriculture Sales team of Chad Barent, Abigail Soncksen, Sage Sherman and Kelli Spike won the state championship and will be competing at nationals in late October at the National FFA Convention.  Practice for the team will begin in mid-July and will go through to the day of competition.

FFA Officer Retreat: The FFA officers will be going on an officer retreat on July 24th where they will be involved in planning the school year’s activities and experience team building activities.

County Fair:   The FFA will be hosting a “Mini-Ag Olympics” on Friday afternoon of the fair.  More about this in a separate article.  Of course they will also be involved in livestock shows, setting up the BBQ, etc.

Roadside Clean-up:  The date for this has yet to be determined but the plan is to have a roadside clean-up prior to school starting.

FFA Fun Day:  Currently, August 8th is being planned as an “FFA Fun Day” to bring chapter members together and potential new members in an afternoon of fun and fellowship.

As stated in the title, FFA activities are year round!
